The Villages and Settlements of Samothraki

Samothraki or Chora

Chora, the capital of Samothraki, dominates the northwest slopes of Mount Sao at an altitude of 300 meters. Its traditional character harmoniously combines with important historical monuments, such as the medieval castle of Gatelouzi and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which houses priceless religious relics.
If you wish to stay in Chora, you can find traditional guesthouses and rental houses, and in its shops, you will discover local products and souvenirs.
Enjoy local flavors in traditional tavernas and charming cafes under the shade of centuries-old plane trees for an unforgettable experience.

Kamariotissa

Kamariotissa, the port of Samothraki, is the main point of entry to the island and simultaneously serves as an important tourist hub. Preserving its traditional character, it offers a variety of services, such as local shops, car and motorcycle rentals, and hair salons. In the area, you will also find comfortable hotels and other accommodation options, while the taverns, fish taverns, cafes, and pastry shops will take care of your culinary delights. Whatever you need to make your vacation unforgettable, Kamariotissa has it all!

From Kamariotissa, the road leads to Potamia, Katsamba, and Palaeopolis, a traditional settlement on the northern side of the island, with around 20 permanent residents. The area is home to the Archaeological Museum and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, where the famous Winged Victory of Samothraki was discovered. The area also features one of the three Medieval Towers of Gatelouzi, as well as the small church of Agia Paraskevi, known for its rare alignment.

Karyotes: Upper & Lower

Heading further north, we encounter the Karyotes, a settlement with lush vegetation and archaeological findings. The Upper Karyotes are located at the foot of Mount Sao, while the Lower Karyotes are closer to the sea. For accommodation in the area, you will find seaside rental rooms and some quaint taverns, but for more options, you will need to continue your journey towards Therma.

Therma (Loutra)

The Therma or Loutra, in the northern part of the island, is one of the most popular destinations in Samothraki. Known for its healing thermal baths, the area also boasts the Gria Vathra Gorge and the "Paradise" bath. The organized beach is ideal for those who want to enjoy the sea, and from here, the trail leading to the summit of the mountain begins...

Platia, Varades, Fonia and Ano Meria

Heading east, we pass Platia and Varades, areas where the camping sites are located. Next, we encounter the gorge and the Fonia Tower, and after crossing the Passages, we reach Ano Meria, a green area full of willows and plane trees. Here, the Panigiri of Agia Paraskevi is celebrated at the homonymous chapel, while the local tavern "Karydies" is famous for its traditional dishes. Ano Meria borders Kantaratika and Kerasia. Beyond Ano Meria lies the Kipos Beach, which is currently not accessible via the main road.

The road then leads us to Xyropotamos, famous for its impressive gorge, which is worth walking through. In Xyropotamos square, you’ll find the church of Agia Fotini and a cafe-ouzeri for a relaxing coffee or meal.

Lakkoma and Prophet Elias

Our journey takes us to Lakkoma, a picturesque settlement combining both sea and mountain. The Lakkoma beach is partially organized, and in the village square, you’ll find a cafe-ouzeri that’s worth visiting. Next, the neighboring village is Prophet Elias, the highest village in Samothraki. It is famous for its stunning view of the Aegean Sea and Mount Athos, as well as its excellent roast goat, served in the many grills in the area.

Daphnes

The last settlement is Daphnes, known for its cultivation of olives and citrus fruits. In the area, Byzantine ruins can be found, and as you continue towards Koitada, you will discover small gorges and hidden natural beauties before reaching the chapel of Panagia Krimniotissa and the famous Pachia Ammos Beach with its golden sandy shore and crystal-clear waters.
