The church of Panagia Krimniotissa in Samothrace is associated with a fascinating story. During the 18th century, during the period of iconoclasm, the icon of Panagia was thrown into the sea by Christian residents of Asia Minor to protect it from attacks by iconoclasts. During a journey around Samothrace, a ship encountered a fierce storm and was about to sink. The captain of the ship saw the icon of Panagia in the waters and brought it aboard, causing the sea to calm down. The next night, Panagia appeared to the captain in his sleep and asked him to transport her to Samothrace. The locals understood her wish and built the chapel on the cliff. Today, the icon of Panagia Krimniotissa is kept in the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Chora of Samothrace, constituting an important part of the local religious tradition.
